Act As If · Confidence guide
What to say before a hard moment, and how to really start to believe in yourself.
It's hard to talk your brain into a big claim it thinks is false. But you can show it proof. Belief in yourself grows most after you do the thing. And here's some good news while you work on it: other people can't see your nerves as much as you think.
01 · 30 seconds
Say "I am excited" out loud before you walk in. Nerves and excitement feel a lot alike in your body: a fast heart and quick breath. Calling it excitement helps you use that energy instead of fighting it.
Then coach yourself by name, the way a friend would.
"I am excited. Sam, you know this. Start with your first line."
Why it works: People who said "I am excited" before singing karaoke sang better than people who said "I am anxious." In another study, people who used their own name or "you" in self-talk before a speech gave better speeches and felt less shame after.
02 · 1 minute a day
Affirmations are big claims you repeat, like "I am lovable." If you already feel low, they can make you feel worse. Proof is a better bet. A receipt is one small, real thing you did that the person you want to be would do.
Each night, write one receipt: the day, and what you did.
Tue: I spoke up once in the meeting.
Wed: I went for a walk when I didn't want to.
Why it works: People who felt bad about themselves felt worse after repeating "I am a lovable person." People who already felt good felt only a little better.
03 · 5 minutes to plan
Pick one thing you want to feel confident about. Write 3 steps, from easy to hard. Make step 1 so easy you could do it today.
Move up only when the step below starts to feel normal.
Step 1: Ask one question in a small meeting.
Step 2: Share one idea.
Step 3: Lead one part of a meeting.
Why it works: Actually doing something is the strongest way to believe you can do it. So start where a win is almost sure.

Write your first receipt. One line. Something you already did today counts.
This is one piece of the Act As If Week, a free 7 day practice. Day 5 goes deeper on receipts. It drops 11/11, and you're already on the list.
